The organization is seeking a dedicated Assistant Controller to lead key accounting functions. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with funding regulations and tax codes, and supporting overall financial excellence through both independent work and supervision of the accounting team.


Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $90,000–$110,000, depending on qualifications
  • Hybrid schedule: Three days per week onsite

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial records, regulatory compliance, and consistent application of accounting principles.
  • Lead proactive process improvements and support organizational efficiency initiatives.
  • Serve as a finance partner and trusted advisor to the Property and Asset Management department.
  • Analyze financial data and present clear, timely financial statements to senior management.
  • Lead accounting closings, financial statement preparation, and audit activities.
  • Oversee all general ledger activities, including journal entries, accounts receivable, and reconciliations.
  • Execute monthly, quarterly, and year?end close processes.
  • Review disbursements and cash receipts for proper allocation.
  • Manage cash flow and bank activity across multiple departments.
  • Support ongoing development and application of administrative cost allocation procedures.
  • Build strong working relationships across departments and with external partners.
  • Proactively identify financial risks or issues and communicate them to leadership.
  • Stay current on accounting standards, monetary policies, and relevant regulations.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Oversee onboarding and training for new team members; assess and enhance training programs.
  • Provide timely performance feedback and develop staff through targeted performance plans.
  • Lead hiring processes for new and replacement staff following organizational guidelines.
  • Mentor supervisory-level employees to ensure effective team management and communication.
  • Manage a team that may include managers, specialists, accountants, clerks, support staff, and temporary workers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration with an Accounting concentration
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible accounting experience (nonprofit preferred)
  • Minimum1 year of mid-level supervisory or lead role
  • CPA designation preferred
  • Experience in property management or real estate development accounting is a plus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and Adobe; ability to learn new technologies
  • Familiarity with government regulations and nonprofit reporting requirements
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills with high attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work effectively with staff at all levels and external partners including auditors, financial institutions, investors, and board members
