EXTRUSION TECHNICIAN

Job Type: Full-Time
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:30 PM
Location: Manufacturing Facility

Position Summary

The Extrusion Technician is responsible for setting up, operating, controlling, troubleshooting, and optimizing plastic extrusion processes. This is a hands-on manufacturing role focused on ensuring extrusion equipment is properly set up, operating efficiently, and producing quality products to specification.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience with plastic extrusion machinery, excellent troubleshooting skills, and the ability to quickly identify and resolve technical issues. Experience setting up and dialing in medical tubing extrusion is highly valued and would place a candidate at the top of the compensation range. Candidates without medical tubing experience should have a strong background in tubing extrusion.

The Extrusion Technician will provide technical support and training to Line Operators and work closely with Quality, Engineering, and Management to resolve production issues and improve processes.

Essential Functions

  • Set up, operate, assist with, and maintain extrusion equipment used to produce thermoplastic tubes, rods, and profiles.
  • Install dies, mandrels, machine screws, sizing rings, and other tooling using hand tools.
  • Start up and shut down multiple extrusion lines safely and efficiently.
  • Perform first-piece inspections and in-process quality checks.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on extrusion equipment.
  • Ensure raw materials are dried, mixed, blended, and colored according to specifications and production requirements.
  • Read job specifications to determine machine adjustments, tooling requirements, and material needs.
  • Adjust machine settings and controls to maintain extrusion within defined processing standards.
  • Troubleshoot plastic extrusion machinery and ancillary equipment.
  • Record production and quality data in the appropriate data collection systems.
  • Package and label finished products according to specifications.
  • Complete housekeeping, cleaning, and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Program and operate Micro-Vu inspection equipment.
  • Write Non-Conformances in the appropriate database and participate in MRB reviews.
  • Set up and operate Laser Linc laser micrometer and ultrasonic wall measurement systems.
  • Monitor safety and PPE requirements within the manufacturing area.
  • Monitor equipment maintenance and safety needs, addressing minor issues and reporting major problems.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives, including new product development, process development, equipment validation, and process validation.
  • Maintain a clean and organized manufacturing environment.
  • Train and provide technical assistance to Line Operators on extrusion processes.

Core Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of plastic extrusion processes and equipment.
  • Understanding of screw and tooling design, material characteristics, temperature control, automated feedback systems, and downstream equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot extrusion processes and identify practical solutions quickly.
  • Strong mathematical skills, including production calculations, ratios, and percentages.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions, diagrams, schedules, specifications, and procedures.
  • Ability to read and follow safety, operating, maintenance, and procedural documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working within an ISO 9001 manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of 6S principles and strong housekeeping practices.
  • Ability to train and mentor Line Operators.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office/Office 365 and ERP/data collection systems.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Required & Preferred Experience

  • 7+ years of plastic extrusion experience preferred.
  • Strong tubing extrusion experience required.
  • Medical tubing extrusion experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience setting up, starting, and dialing in extrusion lines.
  • Basic understanding of process engineering principles.
  • Polymer processing vocational or technical education/certification is a plus.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Understanding of extruders and ancillary equipment such as pullers, cutters, pumps, and related systems.
  • Ability to verify product quality, including color, width, thickness, and other dimensional characteristics.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing safety and ergonomics.
  • Dependable, positive, and collaborative approach to work.

Compensation

Compensation will be based on experience and technical expertise.

Top of the compensation range: Candidates with proven experience setting up and dialing in medical tubing extrusion.

Base of the compensation range: Candidates with strong tubing extrusion experience but without direct medical tubing extrusion experience.
