Chief Financial Officer – part time

Masis Professional Group is recruiting for an CFO for a small Worcester-based affordable housing organization. This is a hands-on individual contributor role for someone who enjoys taking ownership of the accounting function, cleaning up processes, improving financial reporting, and helping leadership get accurate, reliable financial information.

This organization has a small team, so this person should be comfortable being directly involved in the day-to-day accounting work. This is not a people management role. The Accounting Manager will report to the Executive Director and will play an important role in strengthening accounting processes, internal controls, audit readiness, and overall financial operations.

This role will start fully onsite in Worcester, MA. There may be potential for a hybrid schedule in the future after the person is fully trained, familiar with the systems, and the current accounting needs are stabilized.

Compensation

The salary range is $85-87K for 20-25 hours per week, depending on experience.

Responsibilities

The Accounting Manager will own the day-to-day accounting function and help ensure the organization’s financial records are accurate, organized, and timely.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing full-cycle accounting, including general ledger activity, journal entries, account reconciliations, and monthly close.
  • Handling accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll-related accounting.
  • Preparing financial reports for leadership and the Board.
  • Reviewing current accounting processes and helping clean up existing issues.
  • Strengthening internal controls and improving accounting workflows.
  • Supporting annual audits and preparing schedules and documentation for outside auditors.
  • Assisting with budgeting, forecasting, and budget-to-actual reporting.
  • Tracking restricted and unrestricted funds, grants, and program-related expenses.
  • Helping ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and applicable reporting requirements.
  • Using Excel to analyze, organize, and explain financial information clearly.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have strong accounting experience and the ability to work independently in a smaller organization. This person should be comfortable identifying issues, improving processes, and helping leadership understand the financial picture.

Qualified candidates should have:

  • At least 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience with QuickBooks.
  • Experience preparing financial reports and supporting audits.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to organize messy or incomplete information.
  • The ability to work onsite in Worcester, MA.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred.

Preferred Experience

The following experience is helpful but not required:

  • Nonprofit accounting experience.
  • Affordable housing, housing authority, or community development experience.
  • Fund accounting or grant accounting experience.
  • Yardi or Yardi Breeze experience.
  • CPA or CPA-track background.
  • Experience helping clean up accounting processes or improve internal controls.

Why This Role May Be a Good Fit

This is a strong opportunity for someone who wants to have a direct impact in a smaller organization without managing a team. The right person will be trusted to take ownership of the accounting function, improve current processes, and help leadership make better financial decisions.

The role may be especially appealing to someone who enjoys hands-on accounting work, likes solving problems, and wants a position where their work is visible and valued.
