Position Summary:

The CNC Machinist is responsible for setting up, programming, and operating CNC lathes and mills to produce precision metal components. This role requires experience with machining processes, inspection techniques, and the ability to interpret blueprints and engineering drawings. Candidates must be able to work independently and maintain a high standard of quality.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Other duties may be assigned.

  • Set up and operate all CNC machining centers.

  • Prepare and operate CNC lathes and mills with minimal supervision.

  • Write, edit, and optimize CNC programs, including multi-axis operations.

  • Generate CNC programs using CAM software (e.g., MasterCAM).

  • Select cutting tools and develop work-holding solutions.

  • Adjust tooling and machine settings to meet specifications.

  • Measure and verify production parts using inspection tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers).

  • Maintain setup and operation documentation.

  • Audit product quality and monitor operator check sheets for conformance.

  • Work in cooperation with Engineering, Quality, Production, Purchasing, and Scheduling teams.

  • Perform preventative maintenance on CNC machines as required.

  • Train other employees in machine operation and setup as needed.

  • Stop machine operation and notify supervisor when parts are out of spec; make programming edits or tooling changes as necessary.

  • Maintain 5S workplace organization and ensure a clean, safe working environment.

  • Support continuous improvement and lean manufacturing efforts.


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a metal manufacturing environment.

  • Aerospace industry experience preferred.

  • Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings.

  • Proficiency with measuring tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers).

  • MasterCAM experience preferred.

  • Strong understanding of feeds, speeds, tool selection, and CNC programming.

  • Ability to perform basic math operations (fractions, decimals, percentages).

  • Solid communication and problem-solving skills.


CNC Experience Levels:

SALARY-$25-37/hour depending on years of experience

Level 1 (Entry-Level)

  • 0–2 years of CNC machining experience.

  • Basic operation of CNC mills and lathes.

  • Works under close supervision; acquires basic operational skills.

Level 2 (Intermediate)

  • 2–5 years of CNC machining experience.

  • Performs setup of CNC mills/lathes and shear machines.

  • 2D programming and GD&T experience.

  • Experience with Wire EDM and Sinker EDM.

  • Works with moderate supervision and capable of running most jobs.

Level 3 (Advanced)

  • 5+ years of CNC machining experience.

  • Includes multi-axis and manual machine operation (lathe/mill).

  • Advanced programming and water jet experience.

  • Capable of running all department jobs and mentoring junior machinists.

  • Works independently with minimal supervision.


Physical Demands:

To perform the essential functions of this job (with or without reasonable accommodation):

  • Regularly required to talk, hear, sit, and use hands to handle small tools.

  • Frequently required to reach, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  • Occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Moderate noise environment.

  • Vision requirements: Near and far vision of 20/30 in both eyes (corrected or uncorrected).

  • Manual dexterity for handling small parts and precision instruments.

  • Ability to operate a forklift (certification preferred or training provided).
