Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager

Overview

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for establishing and leading foundational EHS systems in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. This role ensures regulatory compliance while embedding safety into core operations as production scales. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who can operate both strategically and tactically, building structure while actively supporting daily manufacturing activities.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and continuously improve site Environmental Health & Safety programs in a startup manufacturing environment.
  • Establish policies, procedures, and standards aligned with OSHA, EPA, ADEQ, and industry best practices.
  • Develop scalable EHS systems that evolve with production growth and facility expansion.
  • Champion a proactive safety culture focused on hazard recognition, accountability, and employee engagement.
  • Lead daily floor engagement, safety walks, and coaching with supervisors and operators.
  • Develop practical safety processes that balance compliance with operational agility.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to manufacturing and chemical operations.
  • Manage environmental programs, including:
    • Hazardous waste and chemical management
    • Air emissions and ventilation controls
    • Spill prevention and emergency response planning
  • Lead incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Implement corrective and preventive actions that scale across operations.
  • Conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and process risk assessments for new equipment and production lines.
  • Support safe operations involving high-energy equipment, lithium-based materials, and chemical handling.
  • Establish exposure monitoring and industrial hygiene programs.
  • Oversee PPE, respiratory protection, ergonomics, and medical surveillance programs.
  • Collaborate with HR on return-to-work and injury prevention initiatives.
  • Manage EHS vendors, consultants, and contractors.
  • Support contractor safety and onboarding programs.
  • Build and scale the future EHS team as operations grow.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7–10+ years of EHS leadership experience
  • Experience in battery, electronics, chemical, semiconductor, or advanced manufacturing environments
  • Startup, plant launch, or rapid-scale manufacturing experience strongly preferred
  • Proven experience building or implementing EHS programs in evolving operations
  • Ability to support off-shift or urgent operational needs during ramp-up phases
  • Ability to work full-time on-site in Phoenix, AZ

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and manufacturing safety programs
  • Experience with EPA/RCRA hazardous waste compliance
  • Expertise in chemical safety and hazard communication
  • Familiarity with lithium-ion or energy storage manufacturing risks (preferred)
  • Experience supporting equipment installation and process scale-up

  • Pay: Dependent on experience (DOE)
  • Schedule: Monday – Friday
  • Location: Phoenix, AZ (on-site)
