Job Title
Grounds Keeper / Sprinkler Technician


Summary
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for maintaining the campus grounds and sprinkler/irrigation systems to ensure a safe, clean and attractive outdoor environment. Duties include mowing, trimming, planting, weed control, sprinkler repair, and general grounds upkeep.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Mow, edge, trim and maintain turf areas; remove weeds, overgrowth and debris from lawns, flower beds and landscaped areas.
  • Trim/prune trees, shrubs and bushes; mulch planting beds and maintain landscape beds.
  • Inspect, maintain, repair and install sprinkler and irrigation systems (e.g., heads, valves, clocks/controllers, lateral and main lines).
  • Manually water planters or areas not covered by automatic irrigation.
  • Maintain and operate landscaping equipment (riding and walk-behind mowers, edgers, trimmers, blowers), and hand tools (shovels, rakes, shears).
  • Keep grounds free of litter, debris, and trash; empty outdoor waste receptacles; clean sidewalks, curbs, benches and other outdoor surfaces.
  • Set up or remove equipment/furniture for campus events as needed (e.g., tables, chairs, barriers).
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment; perform basic maintenance on grounds equipment; report larger repair needs.
  • Work cooperatively with other campus departments (Facilities, Safety, Events) and respond to emergency grounds issues when required (e.g., irrigation leaks, fallen limbs, storm damage).
  • Comply with safety standards, proper use of tools, chemicals (herbicides/fertilizers), and outdoor work conditions (heat, weather).

Qualifications
Required:

  • High school diploma or GED (or equivalent).
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license and clean driving record (if driving is required).
  • Ability to work outdoors in this region’s climate (hot summers, etc.).
  • Ability to lift and carry moderate weight (50 lbs+), bend/stoop/kneel, climb ladders, walk on uneven terrain.
  • Basic knowledge of grounds-keeping operations (mowing, trimming, irrigation) or willing to learn.
  • Previous experience (1 year or more) in grounds maintenance or irrigation work.
  • Experience repairing or installing sprinkler/irrigation systems.
  • Certification or training in horticulture, irrigation, pest/herbicide application.
  • Ability to read and interpret irrigation plans or campus landscape plans.
