5 Signs It’s Time for a Career Transition

Changing careers can be a frightening and stressful experience. Due to all of the emotions you may feel, you may even consider putting it off or avoiding it altogether. However, if a career transition is what you need to be happy, improve your lifestyle, or to increase your engagement in the workplace, it may be worth all the anxiety and stress you may feel. 

Here are five signs that it is time for a career transition.

1. You are Bored at Work

Do you find yourself constantly bored at work? Are there few tasks that challenge or excite you? When you face this boredom for too long, you dread going to work and you quickly find reasons to avoid it. When this occurs, it may be best to look for new employment or talk to your management and discuss new tasks, changes in your position, and more. 

2. You Experience Panic Attacks

As you think about the upcoming work week on a Sunday evening, do you feel a tightening in your chest and it is suddenly difficult to breathe? If so, it is time for a career change. These are a few of the signs of a panic attack and can happen when your stress levels are too high. If these feelings are constant, it can wear on your body, affecting both your physical and mental health. 

3. The Perks are Limited

Money isn’t everything in a job. There are many additional perks that can increase engagement levels, save you money, and make the job worth it. For example, a few of these perks include health insurance, tuition reimbursement, paid time off, technology stipends, etc. If you are only working a specific job due to the money and you are not receiving many additional perks, you are missing out on many opportunities. 

4. You Don’t Feel Appreciated

When you feel appreciated and recognized by your company, you are more loyal, feel more engaged, and are happier with your career. According to a Deloitte study, companies with employee recognition programs have a 31% lower voluntary turnover rate. Plus, other research shows that employees who feel appreciated and valued increase their productivity by 43%

There are many ways that you can feel appreciated in the workplace. This can include both private and public recognition from a superior, praise from a colleague, excellent performance reviews, raises, and promotions. If you don’t feel like you are receiving any type of recognition or praise — and you honestly deserve it — it may be time to look for a company that will offer it. 

5. You Always Think About the Future

It is important that you look toward the future. You want to look forward to help you reach new goals, achieve success, improve yourself, etc. However, if you are constantly looking to the future and imagining yourself in a new position, in a new career, etc., this could be a sign you are ready for change. 

If you find yourself daydreaming about change often, ask yourself, “If I was given the opportunity to leave today, would I take it?” If your instinct is to say yes, right away, it may be something worth considering. 

A career change can certainly be frightening but it may also be the best thing you need for your confidence, goals, mental health, and more. Consider the above five factors to determine if a change is truly what you need to be happy and to find success.
